Tips to prepare your decorations for their temporary home

One of the perks of renting out self-storage space is that you always have a place to store your decorations between uses. That means no closets crammed with holiday decor for the majority of the year!

However, when storing your decorations in a self-storage unit, it’s important to make sure you’re taking the proper care as you prepare to stow them away for months (or maybe years) on end. While this can certainly be a time-consuming task, it’s essential for preserving your decorations so that you get the most use out of them year after year. 

Here are all of our tips for preparing your decorations for their temporary home in a self-storage facility. 

Make sure decor is properly cleaned before storing

Your decorations could be in storage for a long time; when it comes to holiday decorations, they’ll be stowed away for at least a year. To ensure they’re in the best possible condition when you unpack them once more, it’s essential to make sure they’re as clean as can be before you pack them up.

Put washable items like pillows and blankets through the washing machine, dust off your trinkets, and give glass items a nice wipe-down with some cleaner. 

Use air-tight containers or plastic bags

Storing your decorations in proper containers is an essential part of preparing them for your self-storage unit. Not only do the containers you use to determine how easy it will be to unpack your decorations in the future, but they’ll also play a major role in the preservation of your belongings.

Special throw pillows and blankets, for example, should always be stored in air-tight containers when you prepare them for storage. That’s because this is the best way to prevent must and mildew. If you ensure this decor is properly stored (and clean before you store them!) they should be fresh and ready to display once it’s time to break them out again. 

Plastic bags can also be extremely helpful for sorting smaller decorations, such as Christmas ornaments or trinkets. It’s helpful to group decorations together in clear bags before putting them into larger containers–that way, sets can stay together, and you can easily find specific decorations without going through too much trouble or searching. 

Take the time to organize

We get it: only a particular type of person really enjoys taking the time to organize their decorations each year. But if you make the sacrifice and get it done, your future self will thank you! It will be well worth it when it comes time to unpack your decorations once again.

It’s probably best to organize your decorations based on holiday, season, or occasion. You may also choose to group decorations together based on the rooms you typically put them in–living room decorations in one box, kitchen decorations in another, and so on.

Properly store your Christmas tree

An artificial Christmas tree is a great way to decorate year after year if you take the time to prepare it for storage. Get the most use out of your tree by storing it properly!

While you may be tempted to toss your tree into a cardboard box until next year, this is a major storage faux-pas. Cardboard will easily disintegrate after some time, rendering it useless for preserving your tree.

Instead, you may want to use a bag specifically meant for storing Christmas trees. Shrinkwrapping your tree is another great option if you’re in a pinch. 

Choose a great self-storage facility

You can take all the necessary measures while preparing your decorations for a storage facility, but it won’t do much good if they’re not stored in a high-quality unit. You may even consider renting a climate-controlled storage unit to ensure proper preservation and protection from outside elements.
